The new website is a load of crap and the removed the live chat option
Awful customer service and horrible communication. For an exchange which should be the fairest to customers and markets, I've had bets on a game almost 2 weeks ago, still being looked into, up to 8 weeks it has said online. My account was also suspended, and an email was only sent 3 hours later about it, followed by a huge request for documents, which I provided within an hour. It has now been 2 weeks, and they average a response every 5 working days and counting. It is a joke that practically the only way they provide to contact is through a futile email, especially as being locked out gives even less hope to speak to someone. What are the odds this review gets a faster response than an email back @smarkets?
Been 5 months now no replies kept my money forget the reach out rubbish just stitch you up DO NOT TRUST THESE PEOPLE as I said got the usual reply you got my address then just send my money how hard is that don't give me all that pony you got the documents

Our Assessment
Smarkets appears to be a matched-bettor friendly exchange with a generous 60-day 0% commission welcome offer. However, players should request and review the full Terms & Conditions for each promotion before participating. The exchange model typically offers better value than traditional bookmakers, but requires different betting strategies.
Terms & Conditions Rating
Smarkets operates as a betting exchange with low base commission (2%) and strong fund protection, but terms contain several concerning elements. The Select Tier effectively penalizes successful bettors with 50% higher commission (3% vs 2%). Aggressive inactive account fees (5% monthly) and extremely broad prohibited activities clauses give operator wide discretion to suspend accounts and confiscate funds. Responsible gambling tools are comprehensive, but account closure/suspension powers are extensive with minimal player recourse during investigations.
Approach with caution. While Smarkets offers competitive base commission rates and operates as a regulated exchange, the terms contain significant red flags. Best suited for recreational bettors who won't trigger Select Tier penalties or inactive fees. Serious/professional bettors should be aware they may face higher commission rates if successful. The broad prohibited activities clauses and extensive account suspension powers create uncertainty. Strong responsible gambling tools are a positive, but don't offset the concerning fund confiscation and penalty provisions. Read all terms carefully and maintain regular account activity to avoid fees.
T&C Pros
- Low commission structure with transparent tiers
Default 2% commission on net winnings, Pro Tier at 1% for high-volume users, clear thresholds (1500 bets or £1M staked per month). Commission only charged on net winnings per market, not per bet.
- Strong fund protection for UK customers
UK customer funds held by Smarkets (Clients) Limited under Trust Deed, meeting Gambling Commission's 'high' level protection. Funds segregated in ring-fenced accounts for non-UK customers.
- Comprehensive responsible gambling tools
Self-exclusion options (definite or indefinite periods), deposit/bet limits customizable by user, 7-day cooling off period for changes, account limits can be set for specific time periods.
- Fast withdrawal processing timeframe
Smarkets commits to process withdrawal requests within 5 working days from receipt. Clear minimum/maximum withdrawal amounts published per payment method.
- Best price execution automatically applied
If better odds available in market, bets automatically matched at more favorable price. Example: back bet at 2.0 matched at 2.2 if available, maintaining bet quantity constant.
T&C Cons
- Aggressive inactive account fees
€5 or 5% of balance per month (whichever is higher for UK residents) after 12 months inactivity. Fee charged monthly until account active again or balance reaches zero. Maximum 6 months of fees applicable.
- Select Tier commission penalty for successful bettors
Users with net profit over £25,000 in 12 months moved to 3% commission on winnings/losses per bet (vs 2% default). Only 7 days advance notice given. Essentially penalizes winning players.
- Broad account suspension and fund confiscation powers
Smarkets can suspend account without notification for 'reasonable grounds' of prohibited activity. Can void bets, withhold balances, and recover deposits/winnings. Funds inaccessible during investigation with no defined timeframe.
- Extensive prohibited activities with vague definitions
Clause 7.3.5 allows voiding for 'any other suspicious betting activity' not explicitly mentioned. 'Suspicious betting' includes 'unusual patterns' and 'inordinate frequency' without clear thresholds. Very broad interpretation possible.
- Deposits held 'in transit' for one week without protection
UK customer funds not protected under Trust Deed for first 7 days after deposit - deemed 'in transit'. During this period, funds at risk if operator becomes insolvent.
- Mandatory Pro Tier lock-in period
Users opting into 1% Pro Tier commission locked in for minimum 3 calendar months plus remainder of current month. Cannot exit early even if unfavorable. Also excludes users from all promotional commission rates.
Important T&C Warnings
- •Successful bettors (£25k+ profit in 12 months) automatically moved to 3% commission tier with only 7 days notice
- •Inactive accounts charged 5% of balance monthly (or €5 minimum) after 12 months - can drain account to zero
- •Operator can suspend account without notification for 'reasonable grounds' and hold funds indefinitely during investigation
- •Very broad 'suspicious betting' definitions allow voiding of bets for 'unusual patterns' without clear thresholds
- •UK customer deposits not protected under Trust Deed for first 7 days ('in transit' period)
- •Pro Tier (1% commission) requires minimum 3+ month commitment and excludes all promotional offers
- •Duplicate accounts during self-exclusion result in winnings confiscation (only deposits returned)

Our Verdict
Smarkets offers 9 payment methods across cards, e-wallets, and bank transfers, with all transactions completely free of charge from the operator's side - a significant advantage. The platform excels with Instant Bank Transfer providing 12-hour withdrawals and £/€100,000 limits. Notable weaknesses include the absence of cryptocurrency options, no prepaid card support (like Paysafecard), and PayPal's restrictive £/€250 daily deposit cap.

Best for Casual Bettors
