The saga is over. Less than 24 hours after Malaga CF confirmed Cordero would not be extending his contract, Newcastle moved swiftly to announce his arrival. The teenager played a key role in Malaga's promotion to the Spanish second tier and had become one of the brightest prospects in Spanish football.

Cordero, a right winger by trade, shone during a standout campaign in La Liga Hypermotion, drawing attention from top clubs including Barcelona and Real Madrid. However, the Jerez native opted for a move to the Premier League.

Talks between Newcastle and Cordero's inner circle began earlier this year, once the academy product entered the final six months of his deal with Malaga. With no agreement reached for a renewal, Newcastle acted quickly to secure the Spain U19 international's services.

He has put pen to paper on a contract until 30 June 2030, though he will be loaned out for the 2025/26 season.

"It's an honour to be here – a real pleasure," said Cordero in the club's official announcement. "I'm someone who likes to aim high, so why not come to one of the best places in the world to do that? It's a big step, and that's one of the reasons I'm here. I can't wait to get started."

Sporting director Paul Mitchell hailed the new arrival as "an exciting talent": "We're delighted to bring him to Newcastle, particularly given the level of interest in him across Spain and Europe. He's a player with a lot of potential. The next phase of his development will be to secure a loan move that challenges him and helps him gain valuable experience."

Cordero made 40 appearances for Malaga in the Spanish second tier last season, starting 23 times, and registered six goals and six assists.

While he will depart on loan initially, he joins a club boasting talents such as Alexander Isak, Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon – and will know the path to the first team will be anything but straightforward.
