This tournament was billed as the redemptive arc to salvage a nightmare year, but it merely served as a dismal postscript to a season to forget. For the Real Madrid engine-room operator, a trophy-less 'year zero' culminated in that surreal confrontation with teammate Tchouameni.

Representing La Celeste, the performances of 'El Pajarito' were a shadow of his usual self. Ineffectual in stalemates against Saudi Arabia (1-1) and Cape Verde (2-2), he was sensationally hooked by Marcelo Bielsa with over half an hour remaining in the do-or-die clash with Spain, while Uruguay were trailing. The final tally? Zero goals, zero assists, palpable friction with 'El Loco', and a painful group-stage exit.

Arda Guler and Kenan Yildiz: The illusion of the 'Golden Generation'

The two poster boys for a new era of Turkish football were unable to prevent the total collapse of Vincenzo Montella's Turkey, who crashed out in the opening round.

Heung-Min Son

Widely regarded as the greatest South Korean player in history, Son arrived at his fourth World Cup having recently ended his legendary spell at Tottenham to join Los Angeles FC.

At 33, however, his impact was almost imperceptible. Withdrawn after 69 minutes in the loss to the Czech Republic and after 57 in the narrow defeat to Mexico, he was even dropped to the bench against South Africa, only appearing as a second-half substitute in another 1-0 loss. A lifeless final act for a true modern great.

Perhaps the most jarring collective failure of this tournament is that of the Mannschaft. Starting as heavy favourites after a rampant 7-1 demolition of Curacao, Germany suffered a shock exit at the hands of Paraguay in the Round of 32. For Musiala, the campaign reflected a fractured season; having spent six months sidelined at Bayern through injury, he fought tooth and nail to be fit.

A starter and goalscorer in the opener against Curacao, Musiala kept his place for the fixtures against Ivory Coast and Ecuador. Yet, when the chips were down against Paraguay, he was consigned to the bench, only introduced for the final 30 minutes. It was too little, too late; he was unable to turn the tide and watched on as they were eliminated on penalties. For a player of his prodigious talent, the return was desperately poor.

Scott McTominay

A hero in Naples, but a bystander in North America. After two seasons as the heartbeat of the Partenopei midfield, McTominay failed to translate that dominance to the Scotland cause. Following a narrow opening win over Haiti, the "Tartan Army" collapsed against Morocco and Brazil to exit in the first round. The numbers make for grim reading: zero goals, zero assists, and a premature flight home.

Having joined Corinthians on a free transfer in 2024 following a career spanning PSV, United, Lyon, Barcelona, and Atletico Madrid, Memphis found himself reduced to a bit-part role. The Netherlands' all-time leading scorer—having surpassed the legendary Van Persie—left no mark on a disappointing campaign for the Oranje, who were dumped out on penalties by Morocco.

The forward failed to start a single game, clocking just 51 minutes across the first three matches and remaining an unused spectator for the duration of the final fixture. A sad conclusion to a long and storied international career.

The 'last dance' for 'O'Ney' proved to be a tragic finale in the famous green and gold. Entrusted by Carlo Ancelotti amid a media frenzy, Brazil’s number ten sought glory but found only heartbreak. His fragile frame failed him once more, forcing him to miss the opening two games through injury. He managed a brief cameo against Scotland but remained rooted to the bench against Japan.

The dream died in the Round of 16 against Norway. Coming on as a substitute, he converted a consolation penalty before the final whistle signaled Brazil's exit. "I tried everything. It's over now.
