Denzel Dumfries has returned from his post-World Cup break after representing the Netherlands at the tournament, linking up with the Real Madrid squad for training under new manager José Mourinho.

The former Inter Milan full-back spoke to the club’s official media after the session about his welcome at Madrid and his ambitions as a new Merengue, offering his first words since joining Los Blancos.

"They’ve made me feel very welcome. A few of the players are still away on World Cup duty, but everyone who’s here has welcomed me really well — the coaching staff, the manager… I’ve felt very welcome from the start. We have a great team and a great manager. It’s a great environment to work in and learn from them," he said.

The Netherlands international also spoke about the importance of pre-season, stressing the role it plays in laying the foundations for the campaign ahead.

"Pre-season is where you build the foundations for the season. New players will arrive during pre-season, so it’s important for us to get to know each other and work hard. Those are the most important things," he added.

"I’m delighted to meet you all. I’m very proud and happy to be here. We’re going to fight for our goals. It’s an honour to play for Real Madrid, and we’ll do everything we can to make you proud," concluded the full-back
