The 2026 World Cup, set to be the largest edition in history with 48 participating nations across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, is already casting a shadow of injury concern over the game's elite.

For any world-class talent, the ultimate nightmare is missing the tournament through injury, and a number of heavy hitters have already seen their dreams dashed before the competition has even begun.

Reigning world champions Argentina are among those reeling from significant personnel losses. Joaquin Panichelli, who has been a standout performer in Ligue 1, suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during a training session with the 'Albiceleste'.

He is joined on the sidelines by Villarreal defender Juan Foyth, who required surgery on an Achilles tendon injury.

For Brazil, the most significant blows involve Real Madrid duo Rodrygo and Eder Militao, both of whom are indispensable starters for Carlo Ancelotti. 'Rayo' suffered a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament and lateral meniscus in his right knee, while the defender underwent surgery on the hamstring tendon of his left leg.

The European powerhouses are also grappling with major setbacks. France will be without Hugo Ekitike after he ruptured his Achilles tendon during a Champions League fixture. Germany must also navigate the tournament without Bayern Munich's Serge Gnabry, who suffered a ruptured adductor muscle in his right thigh.

Elsewhere, several stars are in a race against time as they treat various ailments, including Luka Modric, Kylian Mbappe, Lamine Yamal, Mikel Merino, Ter Stegen, and Cuti Romero.

Their absence from their respective clubs during the business end of the 2025-26 season represents a massive blow to their recovery efforts and national team aspirations.
