Injuries continue to plague Ferland Mendy. The French full-back has been ruled out for the rest of the campaign following his withdrawal from the match between Real Madrid and Espanyol this past Sunday.

According to the 'Merengues' medical report, Mendy has been diagnosed with "an injury to the rectus femoris tendon in his right leg." Reports from COPE suggest that should surgery be required, the Frenchman could be sidelined for at least five months.

On this occasion, the player managed only three matches and 11 minutes of football before breaking down once again. At the beginning of April, he had returned from a month-long layoff—sustained during the second leg against City—with his sights set on the major clash against Bayern.

The injury Mendy is currently suffering from is similar to the one that kept him out for a lengthy period a year ago. At that time, the Frenchman required surgery for a rupture of the proximal tendon of the rectus anterior in the quadriceps of the same leg (the right). On that occasion, he also went down ten minutes into the Copa del Rey final against Barça, with the operation taking place on 30 April 2025.

Mendy’s return did not occur until November, seven months later, but he played only one match against Olympiacos before breaking down yet again—that time with an injury to the biceps femoris of his right leg. That kept him out until January. He featured against Betis and Atlético in the Supercopa semi-final before an ankle problem forced him to stop.

This led to the aforementioned City match, where he was forced off at half-time with further difficulties in the same muscle group. In Munich, he left a positive impression while containing Michael Olise, but for over a year now, all his appearances have followed this pattern: sporadic, bordering on the mythological.

A succession of injuries continues to hinder a footballer who was a pivotal defensive figure in the club's last two European Cup triumphs, but who now faces an uncertain future despite having two years remaining on his contract until 2028.
