It is official. Following the expiration of his contract at Liverpool, French powerhouse Ibrahima Konate has committed his future to Real Madrid, signing a deal that runs until 30 June 2030.

Konate was one of two primary targets identified by Florentino Perez during his electoral campaign, alongside Denzel Dumfries. While the Frenchman was the first to agree terms, the club recently sprung a surprise by announcing the arrival of Marc Cucurella. For now, Madridistas will have to wait for the defender's official unveiling, which will not take place until the World Cup concludes.

Born in Paris on 25 May 1999, Ibrahima Konate makes the move to the Santiago Bernabeu after five seasons with Liverpool. During his time as a 'Red', he racked up 183 appearances and netted seven goals. Forming a formidable partnership with Virgil van Dijk, he became a cornerstone for both Jurgen Klopp and Arne Slot, lifting five trophies: the Premier League title, two EFL Cups, the FA Cup, and a Community Shield.

Admittedly, the centre-back's form wavered over the past twelve months, punctuated by several high-profile lapses. Real Madrid had long been admirers, though their interest appeared to cool amid these struggles and the expectation of a contract extension at Anfield. However, once Liverpool confirmed that talks had reached an impasse, the 'Merengues' moved swiftly to reignite negotiations.

With Real Madrid in the market for two new centre-backs, the chance to land an elite talent on a free transfer was too good to pass up. The club are confident that under the guidance of Jose Mourinho, Konate will rediscover the imperious form that helped Arne Slot’s side to Premier League glory just one year ago.

Injury concerns linger

The Parisian's career began at Sochaux, where he departed for RB Leipzig at just 18 after a single season in Ligue 2. In Germany, he flourished alongside fellow French starlets Dayot Upamecano and Nordi Mukiele, though fitness issues were already beginning to surface. During the 2019-20 campaign, as Leipzig reached the Champions League semi-finals under Julian Nagelsmann, Konate spent five months on the sidelines with a muscular injury.

The following 2020-21 season, he was out for over 100 days with ankle and ligament damage. Nevertheless, he proved his quality and joined Liverpool in 2021 for 40 million euros, departing Germany after 95 appearances and four goals.

His time at Anfield was a mix of individual brilliance and frustrating setbacks. His most difficult period came in 2022-23, when he missed more than twenty matches. Conversely, the 2025-26 season was his most robust to date; despite a dip in consistency, he registered a personal record of 4,280 minutes across 51 outings.

Ibrahima Konate arrives to bolster a backline that has been ravaged by injuries, though further defensive reinforcements are expected. The 27-year-old, who boasts 29 caps for France, will compete with Dean Huijsen and Antonio Rudiger for a starting spot, while the club monitors the progress of Raul Asencio and the recovery of Eder Militao following David Alaba’s departure as a free agent.
