FC Barcelona began their pre-season campaign with a 2-2 draw against Birmingham City, eventually succumbing 3-2 in a penalty shootout to decide the winner of the friendly trophy. Hansi Flick’s charges initially struggled to cope with the high-pressing English outfit, falling behind in the 31st minute when August Priske rose to head home an Alex Cochrane cross. However, the Blaugrana found a response shortly before the interval as Hamza Abdelkarim earned a penalty and coolly converted the spot-kick in the 42nd minute to restore parity.

Flick rung the changes following the restart, and it was the introduction of Roony Bardghji that injected fresh impetus into the side. The youngster was instrumental in the goal that made it 2-1 in the 60th minute, forcing Beadle into a parry that fell kindly for Abdelkarim to sweep home his second of the afternoon. Yet, the Catalan advantage proved short-lived; just eight minutes later, Jhon Solis latched onto a Klarer assist to level the scores once more. Bardghji remained a constant thorn in the Birmingham defence and almost secured victory in stoppage time, only to be thwarted by a superb Beadle save, while Alex Gonzalez saw a late header hooked off the line.

With the deadlock unbroken at the final whistle, the contest moved to penalties, where Birmingham City displayed the greater composure to triumph 3-2. While Yaakobishvili produced a save and both Alvaro Cortes and Toni Fernandez found the net, misses from Bardghji, Pesquer, and Farinas ultimately handed the trophy to the Blues. Despite the result, the clinical finishing of Abdelkarim and the creative spark provided by Bardghji offered plenty of encouragement for Flick in his first outing in the dugout.
