Real Madrid's trip to the Balearics was an unhappy one as they lost 1-0 to Mallorca at Son Moix in La Liga. Lago Junior scored after seven minutes and then Vicente Moreno's side were well ordered in defence to prevent Real from taking anything from the game.

The side from the mainland started positively with Isco testing Manolo Reina inside the first minute on a heavily watered pitch, but they found themselves behind six minutes later. Lago Junior was given the ball on the near side by Febas just inside the opposition's half and he sprinted down the flank past Odriozola before cutting inside and beating Courtois with a shot across him into the far corner.

It nearly got worse for them in the 14th minute after a mix up between Militao and Ramos when Budimir scored, but the Bosnian born Croatian was offside. Then just two minutes later, Febas and Fran Gamez were a whisker away from turning home Lago Junior's cross. After these near misses, Zidane's men finally woke up and were the better team for the rest of the half. Vinicius caused Sastre numerous problems down his right hand side. So much so that Mallorca subbed him off at the interval.

The visitors had their chances as well. Vinicius scuffed an effort wide from inside the D in the 25th minute while Marcelo hit a tame shot at Reina and Casemiro struck off target later on, but the best opportunity fell to Karim Benzema. James sent a stunning long pass which Benzema let bounce before scooping the ball onto the crossbar. Despite not having many chances, the side from the capital were looking dangerous, but half-time killed their momentum.

In the second half, Sastre was replaced by Lumor and Mallorca were well ordered against a rather toothless Real attack. In fact, Lumor showed his enthusiasm seconds after the resumption with a 30 yard strike which flew over the crossbar. At the other end, 'Los Blancos' mainly resorted to crosses into the box which the home side dealt with very easily. They had just a few chances in the whole half.

Benzema's strike in the 53rd minute deflected off Baba, but ended up going straight into Baba's hands before Ramos hit a free kick over the bar 11 minutes later. The away side were trying, but unable to penetrate the home defence and 16 minutes from time, it got worse for them when Odriozola was sent off. He made a needless and terrible challenge on Lago Junior over on the far side and he was rightly shown his second yellow card.

Just after the red card, Vinicius made another dangerous move down Mallorca's right past Fran Gamez, but the islanders managed to clear their lines. Then, four minutes from the end, controversy arose. Salva Sevilla was clearly grabbing Brahim Diaz's shirt from a set piece and the referee did not spot the infringement. Inexplicably though, the VAR Ignacio Iglesias Villanueva did not alert the referee to the clear pull and the away side were denied an opportunity to level from 12 yards.

Real sent into a couple of free-kicks in stoppage time which came to nothing and Son Moix erupted when the final whistle went. It was Mallorca's first win over Real Madrid at the venue since 2006 and they are now outside the relegation zone and in 14th after back to back victories. For Real Madrid it was a missed opportunity as a win would have seen them go top back above Barca. Despite the refereeing error, Zidane's men were very poor and they need to pick themselves up ahead of a vital Champions League match at Gallatasaray on Tuesday.
